Was their supernaturalness in the books? Inexplicable, illogical supernality?
I doubt this film is based on an individual story. There was never a supernatural explanation in any Holmes book. It is part of the convention of the genre that all mysteries must have rational explanations. In The Hound of the Baskervilles, for example, the idea of a spectral dog is presented only to be disproven.
