Ah, the never-ending dilemma. Should I watch it first? Or read it first? I really want to read the novel, but I am worried that will make me hate a movie I really want to love (the trailer has made me cry three times already). Conversely, I'm afraid that if I watch the movie first, I will ruin something of the novel's magic.

...(preferably one you already know), obtain the book through your local library or bookstore, and then read it to him/her. Happiness ensues.

It's a very simple story with amazing illustrations that's marvelous. The last line (which I won't spoil) is so wonderful, it makes me smile just thinking about it.
