The smoke monster can obviously take the form of dead people, but only people whose bodies are on the Island. Think about it: Christian(possibly), Eko's brother, Ben's daughter Alex, and now Locke. Their bodies were all on the island.
Ugh. This show confuses the heck out of me.


IIRC, Hurley once saw a a friend of his who was never on the island. Some skinny guy who used to work at the same chicken shack as him, or something... it was back in season 2 or 3. Anyway, he was never on the island. Maybe it's a mistake. Maybe Hurley's dead-people-vision is outside of this theory. Who knows.

That's the only exception to your rule that I can think of, because we know Eko's brother crashed there, Christian's coffin, etc.

Still makes me wonder how they got Locke's Dad there...
The sword might be grateful to the forge fire, but never fond of it.
