IIRC, Hurley once saw a a friend of his who was never on the island. Some skinny guy who used to work at the same chicken shack as him, or something... it was back in season 2 or 3. Anyway, he was never on the island. Maybe it's a mistake. Maybe Hurley's dead-people-vision is outside of this theory. Who knows.
Still makes me wonder how they got Locke's Dad there...
Hurley saw one of his old asylum buddies...except that we later learned that the asylum buddy didn't exist in the 'real' world, just in Hurley's psychosis. So that's sort of up in the air. Walt, on the other hand, appeared to Shannon and Sayid, and he wasn't dead at the time. And let's not forget his 'older' appearance to Locke.
Maybe smoky can use dead people, but Jacob can channel people's memories of people/animals, e.g., Kate's horse.
The chief difficulty Alice found at first was in managing her flamingo.

I'd guess he's not on the Island cause the Island isn't there...it was underwater in the premier

Ethan's last name was Rom. Ethan Rom was an anagram for "Other Man". *NM*
