Hey, I had moderate feelings about it! What now?? Darth_Katie Send a noteboard - 27/02/2010 03:45:57 PM
I loved this movie. You may hate it. I don't think many people will have only moderate feelings about it - you'll love it, or hate it.

The movie is unashamedly cliched, and tries to cram all of greek mythology into one film. Zeus's lightning bolt has been stolen, and he blames Poseidon's son. He wants it back in 14 days, or there will be war aka. the end of the world.

Everything that has ever been in greek mythology makes an appearance, and it's all very silly and impressive. The movie is lots of fun, with some good one liners and no real moments of idiocy. There are some good special effects, and the characters are played well and are likeable, unlike what the reviews generally said. I've never read the book, so I didn't notice if they changed anything.

It was a very silly movie, and that was the point. It's one of the reasons why I liked it. It didn't try to be anything other than it was, which is escapist fantasy. After all, who wouldn't want to find out their life sucks because as it turns out they're a demigod? That would be awesome! Percy is pretty much a classic Gary Stu - consider the way he waltz into the Camp and kicks everyone's ass at swordfighting even though he literally just got there - but he's also pretty likable as you said, so that's okay. It was the point.

It was a ridiculous movie riddled with gaping plot holes, but I'm cool with that because it was super fun. It was funny! I was afraid at a couple of points that they were going to go into angsting territory over Daddy-issues, but thankfully not. The whole thing stayed just light, and moved along quickly. It was fun. I probably won't ever watch it again, but I definitely enjoyed the experience. Very entertaining.

P.S. I've never read the books either, but my roommate says they were very different. She was pretty mad about it ... she said that they cut out all the potential ties to the sequel and have dug themselves into a hole if they plan on making the next couple of books into movies. I told her that I think they were trying to make it a stand-alone because they didn't know if they would be making a sequel until it proves to be profitable or not. We'll have to wait and see, I suppose ...

Oh, and another thing: Kevin McKidd (the dude who plays Poseidon) is HOT. Why couldn't he have been in more of the movie?? Maybe for the sequel, eh?
