I'm currently in the process of acquiring the series. Is there anything I should keep in mind as I watch? I understand there is a five season story arc or something. What are some of the good things and some of the bad with this show? Keep in mind that I love Star Trek DS9 and I don't know why it's taken so long to try this show out.
I loved DS9 too. This is different.
The dialogue is, for the most part, TER-RIB-BUL. The major story arcs are well thought out and creative - long-term planning is definitely the creator's strongpoint. But this show came along right when scifi was transitioning from hokey and forced to a more natural/adventurous feel, so some elements and plots retain that sort of early 80s-original-BSG feel.
the characters can be interesting, but sometimes too predictable.
the special effects are mostly awful, but sometimes so epic that you don't care. blame this on the technology at the time of the show's creation, there's no lack of imagination on the creator's part.
the individual episodes can get pretty cheesy, with a lot of monologuing and unfunny humor.
and, as I said, the dialogue can be downright painful.
