I think it was much better than Tennant's first episode, I feel it established the characters much better and more fully than that opening did.
I like how he showed elements of his previous incarnation as he struggled to work out what his new personality was, it made the process more obvious.

I am not sure it is entirely fair to compare the two. In the Tennant one, the new Doctor was the only new character to be introduced, and he was asleep most of the time.
