If the plasma tv has degraded to 50% brightness, how can people turn it up? 
So I'll go ahead and answer you just in case you aren't. All it means is that it after 100,000 hours on average your TV is only capable of producing 50% of the light it used to....and since most people don't have the brightness turned up to 100%, you can just turn up the settings to compensate for the lost brightness.
