I agree that having the exhaust pipe be such a weakness in the Death Star is an obvious plot device. But at least it served the plot. Unlike the stupid boring pod race.
Why are you so hung up at defending this crap ? When I was a kid Star Wars was my life. I once calculated that I must have seen the original at least 200 times. And you know what that means ? I really really really wanted to like these movies.
Take comfort that Ewoks suck too.
