Even though he actually was a successful mastermind up till the middle of WWII.

People bent on doing such evil won't be able to restrain themselves and will end doing stupid and self-destructive things.

Another example is terrorists. They're so bent on killing westerners that they don't seem to realize that attracting the military might of America might not be healthy for them.

Al Capone arranged for his own jail cell in an effort to lay low, and that didn't work out very well.

Even the smartest of evil masterminds do stupid things because they're personality is so flawed.
