I think the reason you haven't seen much discussion about this particular scenario is because of the multiple instances in the books where Rand thinks to himself about Asmo's disappearance, in such as way as to make it very clear Rand had nothing to do w/ it.
In other words, Rand drops not-so-subtle hints that he has no idea what happened to Asmo. More than once.
