I think that there were giant ter'angreal that propagated all five flows over a large area.
If your toaster was a ter'angreal, it would draw Fire and Air (whatever), and make the toast.
I think that the standing flows ended when those ter'angreal were destroyed in the War of Power. They were probably early and important targets for both sides.
