They are common enough in Seanchan and with the Aiel though darius_sedai Send a noteboard - 27/06/2010 03:47:18 PM
You'll notice that there aren't ANY female Whitecloaks. Not a one. Which is strange in a world where both men and woman can be soldiers, and have about equal rights in society. You would think that there would be at least a few women in the ranks of the Children. But no. They are there as a masculine balance to the White Tower(They probably outnumber the tower by about 20 to 1). Now with the return of male Channelers, their function in the world has been subsumed.

In Crossroads of Twilight
The Blazing Beacon (Elayne's POV)

Master Ros' doubt might be explained by the fact that the riders' coats were silk, as were their red breeches with the white stripe up each leg, and the pale lace they wore at neck and cuff. They certainly appeared more ceremonial than effective. Or it might have been that they were all women. Women were uncommon in jobs that required using weapons, just the occasional merchants' guard or a rare woman who turned up in an army during time of war, and Elayne had never heard of a group of all-female soldiers before she created one. Except the Maidens, of course, but they were Aiel and a different matter.

Also, a lot of women hold the white tower in high esteem, and women are somewhat more trusting of Aes Sedai than men are. Many have a secret desire to go there to learn, or have tried before and couldn't learn. It would make sense that there really aren't women who want to join a cause that denounces Aes Sedai as darkfriends while simultaneously becoming a soldier.

Just not in the mainland countries.
