You're right. We know Taim is a darkfriend, and it wouldn't be that strange if he gave Rand a fake seal. as saidarisnowtainted said: he cannot test that the seal is heartstone because they are all crumbling. Also, since the seals are not ter'angreal, they wouldn't have any resonance or responce to the OP that would positively identify them as genuine seals. (I don't think) That would be a VERY interesting twist indeed.
But why should Rand be able to tell that the seal is genuine? He can't test its strength as heartsone. He has to be extremely careful with it.
