Sanderson has stated that Demandred's identity is the greatest mystery in the series and that this mystery will pay off in the end.

The only way I'd gasp at Demandred's disguise would be if he turned out to be a relatively major character... like Bashere or Gaul. If he's some background rubbish character like Roedran, I won't even blink.
