I remember seeing on television some years ago something that seems similar. Basically it was U.S. troops discovering traps but instead of disarming them, they would add extra traps so when enemy troops came back to check on their work they would fall prey to the new traps. Perhaps RJ was just drawing on his war experiences for this aspect of the books.
