It feels, as you indicate, like an outside observer looking in on RJ's creation, rather than the creator. I find that I agree with you - he doesn't feel as comfortable with the world.

And, yes, "workaday" stood out to me, because I'm not quite sure that word fits within the framework of the words RJ used to describe things.
