Especially considering what BS said and the title & blurb of ToM, it seems ToM will be at least as dark as TGS, possibly darker, and more military. Lan's death and a defeat of his army would fit with that, I think.
If it is well written, Lan's death and the reactions of not only Nynaeve but basically the whole main cast of characters (e.g. Rand or Moiraine), could create a most powerful and heart-wrenching scene. And IMO such casualties would make the threat of the Shadow for the Westlands and the main characters more palpable before the last act in AMoL.
