I like the theory and I had my questions on Bashere as well torwards the beginning but I can only say after multiple POV's from Lord Bashere he is not a darkfriend. Though your theory might work if he was under some type of strong compulsion. Though he seems the type that would need multiple compulsions before things really sank in like Nynaeve and Elayne they just shook theres off after a bit.
It's not compulsion. I think Bashere is a Darkfriend by choice, much like Ingtar was, for mostly the same reasons. Bashere's PoV's (just 2, I think it was) don't exactly shout he's a Darkfriend, yet there's little hints even in those (like the murderous look, for instance). It's some of his actions and the whole sharade when he attached himself to the Dragon Reborn that speak volumes.
I don't think that was a sharade when he attached himself to Rand. He is a borderlander. He was convinced Rand is the Dragon Reborn. The Dragon Reborn will fight the last battle. Bashere HAS to be there for the last battle. He is a great captain and he attached himself to Rand because it was the right move to make at the time. Not because he is a darkfriend. Of course I do recognize the possibility that he is but I highly doubt it.
