Sorry, but you have it slightly wrong. It hasn't been fully explained that I'm aware of, but Ishmael didn't break free before the others, he was never completely bound in the first place somehow. He pops in and out of history in various places which makes me think he wasn't completely free and/or wasn't free the entire time somehow.
