When the DO tainted saidin, the pattern itself could have been affected. With 3000 years of the Taint influencing the pattern humanity would have faced many dark hardships especially an endless succession of wars. This is why the cleansing of the taint might have been the most important factor in influencing all the events that led up to Rand's decision to spare creation and give humanity a chance at another spinning of the wheel.
All good things come to those who wait.
