It could very well be that they engage in the behavior simply because they know how terrorizing it is to their victim. It's just another weapon... None of these creatures actually breeds, so they 'shoot blanks' anyway, so to speak. If there's no natural inclination to breed to start from, there's probably no appetite for it either.
