Of course it's a wacky theory; it's likely not true. However, once the book is out and read, theories both wild and plausible dissolve to mist in the reality of the text.
So, despite your recriminations of the less plausible ideas out there in defense of the bluntly obvious, I choose to enjoy the freedom of not knowing that allows us to come up with the most outrageous of hypotheses.
