He's fun, and I relate to him. Joel Send a noteboard - 06/10/2010 06:55:21 AM
Heretic.

I have a hard time identifying with slackers and whiners. Mat is both of these in triplicate. Plus, he is ordinary in the world of fiction. *YAWN* Not ANOTHER 'everyman trickster womanizer with a heart of gold'.

Mat has his moments and I am sure he will be fine in ToM. But being excited about Mat is about like being excited about a Big Mac with fries. Sure almost everybody likes a Big Mac with fries and I wouldn't mind having one. I just don't get all worked up about the fact that I get to eat them or think that it is the best meal EVAH.

There's more to Mat than that stock trope, too; most fictional slackers aren't military geniuses, for example. I hear what you're saying, but even if I granted all of it (which I don't) if you LIKE Big Macs and haven't had many for half a decade, the idea of a Big Mac Buffet is appealing.
