To scare her? Gher Send a noteboard - 07/11/2010 12:01:27 AM
Honestly, I think the Shadow sent in an agent that was skilled enough to find Lanfear, but didn't have to worry about getting back out. The agent (whether Compelled, turned, or a honest-to-goodness true believer) went in, found and killed Lanfear, maybe made some wishes to help out the Shadow, and died. Lanfear is transmigrated after having only some of her potential eaten.

So why was Moiraine fed some cock and bull story about her?

If they told Moiraine that Lanfear got rescued, that isn't likely to lead to any more emotion from Moiraine, other than despair, and perhaps a shred of hope. And since despair doesn't quite get the heart thumping like fear does, telling Moiraine that they messed up and killed Lanfear during the exact same procedure is a much better story.
