It might be that the general Demandred will be killed by Mat who is another great general, while Rand will face opponents more on his level now such as Shaidar Haran and the naeb'lis Moridin.
Last year Brandon said in an interview that it will pay off that Demandred remained hidden all the time. While I'm not sure whether he meant plot-wise or for the Shadow, it would be too cheap IMO to have him simply confront Mat on a battlefield and be killed off by him.
OTOH, if (!) he's really behind Roedran, some nice scenes could happen at Rand's great gathering.
