Sure, you got the main detail right, but your reasoning was completely off.

I went back and read the chapter in TGS... there is no reason why anyone should even think that Graendal might live on. There was no mention of the bird, no nothing. It was deus ex machina of the finest kind.

What basically happened was the "Graendal survived" people were groping around in the dark and struck gold.

It was deliberately set up so that there was no conceivable way she could escape, just so a contrived and completely impossible to anticipate escape could be provided and make us all feel stupid. I suppose we could argue that if there's no body you can't be sure, but that seems a little to meta for me, especially after things like "Sammael is toast".
