I got the impression that the Ashaman in the BT are being turned via 13 and a Fade.
They have glassy eyes with an unnatural smile that doesnt reach the eyes.
The red-veiled Aiel at the end of the book also have glassy eyes with this unnatural smile. I had the thought that these were male channelers that went to the blight and were turned via 13 and a Fade.
The scene with SH and Graendal revisits his big unnatural/unnerving smile.
I had the thought that any channeler turned via 13 is somehow controlled by the fade involved. That explains the eyes and the fade-like smile.

Another possibility is that these red-veiled Aiel have been corrupted by Fain as he makes his way through the Blight. The Trollocs that he encoutered in the Prologue of ToM were dramatically changed by his new "powers".
