Wouldn't that make the fourth age redundant? From what little we know about it it's a technological age as well. Surely each age has a unique theme?
1?) Dreams and communion with animals
2) Channeling
3) Struggle with the DO
4?) Technology
As for the Portal Stones, they look like a weak spot in RJ's worldbuilding. Not only their mysterious source (4 ages! that's way too much imo for their continued legibility and functionality) but the very existence of these mirror worlds undermines the story.
