What's the connection between Arafel and the tinkers?

I'm just not sure if his place will be as the leader of male Aes Sedai or whether he will defend the People of the Dragon; it seems to make sense that he comes from Arafel when we've heard that that nation has strange historical connections to the Tinkers. It makes a certain sense that he might possibly guard the Aiel (perhaps the gai'shain will become something like the male Aes Sedais' Warders) using a Sword that isn't a Sword.
You may be right that Callandor won't be as important in the end as it's made to be but prophecy seems to suggest that it's role is important and the scene on Dragonmount where Rand destroys the Choedan Chal was about returning to his appointed weapon, Callandor instead of the super-cheater weapon.

I really haven't been convinced that Callandor is important to winning Tarmon Gaidon.

Yes, that's possible. Just not very clear now.

I'm not really finding anything that says Callandor is Rands'/was Lews Therins' "appointed" weapon

Yeah, it's too bad none of the Forsaken have shown any signs of being conflicted

Maybe the flaw in Callandor magnifying the taint will stop the DO from cutting off access to the TP *NM*
