Gratuitous deaths do not make a good story, any more than giving main characters plot armour.

Character death should occur when it is valuable to the story.

Agreed.
Moreover, if for whole 13 books never a main character died, I also would consider bad writing for one to die in the 14th and last one.
Either something "sometimes happens", or it never does.
