The way the text is read, it seems like whoever killed him was there for a reason, they didnt fumble to kill him in the slightest and he seemed absolutely sure he was going to die in an instant, which seems like he thought the murderer hated him.
Keep in mind that immediately after he said "You?!" he screamed "Noo", so he couldnt have been seeing what she was weaving, he saw her and knew he would die. Would she REALLY have instantly thought to balefire him the second she saw him? It seems more in her character to shield him & interrogate him, or overwhelm him with Compulsion. Especially Compulsion seems like a first instinct for her, and she was able to get Moggy and Cyndane together that way.
Asmodean could barely channel due to Lanfear's shield and he knew that all Forsaken would kill him at first chance since for them he was a traitor, so his reaction was understandable.
As for Graendal not using Compulsion - she didn't know Asmodean had a shield on him. And as a man he's probably stronger in the power than her, which called for the most potent weapon in her arsenal and killing him as fast as possible. Anything else would've been really risky.
I never understood the Lanfear theory not only in terms of opportunity (it required really elaborate explanations how she got out of Finnland so quickly), but mainly because if she had gotten out, she would've attacked Rand, not Asmo. It was him she was mad at, and she was killing him at the docks before Moiraine intervened, so she had no reason to fear him.
