i dont think it is odd at all. They are direct rivals. They both seek attention from others. Thom because of his profession. Fain for who knows why. (weirdo). So they would be well aware of eachother.
Given the confines of the small area (relatively speaking) they are workin in, it is likely that they've randomly crossed eachother and eachother's path before the series started.
