Doing the prequels with Moiraine for example would rock.
Yes, but having a main character from the book would be risky (look at how people hate Mat by Sanderson). I think it would be best to create all the protagonists, and show characters from the book "not too much", unless they are minor characters in the books and become major in this movie/series.
