he is rummored to be alive. Perhaps indications that he is alive were a ploy by someone else (trollocs that attacked the manor Rand was staying in).


Jordan said it's Mashadar that killed Sammael and got his soul. It sounds like Rand's balefire missed him or was too late.

Another ironic death.. Sammael, the methodical defender, got stabbed in the back because he failed to prepare proper defensive positions against Mashadar in SL, and saw his own deathtrap snap on himself.
