I must admit, I was disappointed in the 'descent' of Elaida into a paranoid, frothing madwoman. The Tower-split plotline would have been much less black-and-white if she'd been allowed to stay as the character we saw when she was newly raised - ferocious and stubborn, but not wholly unreasonable, and not incompetent. But a mixture Alviarin's manipulation and, I think, the Fain evil!whammy, sent her into something of a death spiral. Getting rid of her started to seem more like putting down a rabid dog - the best thing for everyone, including the dog.
I totally agree, it could have been much more interesting if she was "another point of view" rather than a madwoman.
Do you suppose, if she'd been raised at a more 'normal' time in Tower history, she would have been a good Amrylin? Or would her character flaws have caught up with her anyway?
Reasoning about the "mad" Elaida is quite pointless: she was a badly developed character which could fill successfully no role in any world (besides being a damane, of course). Reasoning about what Elaida could have been if she didn't develop that way risks being too speculative and too far from canon.
