A rear guard is just that: a guard. One that specifically allows retreating allied forces to escape safely without turning the entire battle into a rout. The rear guard vows never to retreat, until the entire forward force is in a position of relative safety. The rear guard is not a shock force or a suicide troop, they will not remain at a battle site after it is all said and done just so they do not retreat. Someone very intelligent once said "Discretion is the better part of valor".
