Where does one draw the line for being too far out? And who draws that line?

1 year is way too far out.

Really, the difference between nine months from now (the original estimate) and eleven months from now (the current estimate) is not all that big. It's a 20% increase in the estimated time we have to wait, but Sanderson did say that the first draft he turned in was 20% larger than everyone was counting on, so ...
