Fairly easy if the access point to the infinite source is finite. Think of a well bored through the ground into the top of an infinitely deep reservoir of water. If you contaminate the well with oil, you only need a finite amount of oil to do so. Jordan did use the oil analogy when discussing the taint, so that is likely the intended mechanism.
I don't necessarily agree. If that was feasible why couldn't the AS think of building a new access point to saidin? As I'm sure they know better than us the nature of the one power. Particularly since they created the Bore seeking a new Source the concept wouldn't have been foreign.
I think it is much more likely that the Taint was as infinite as the One Power but of a different quality. The One Power still had to be reachable in order for people to continue to want it and create chaos while using it. So the DO created it to that purpose.
