Amazon and BN have been pre-selling with free shipping for Jan 8th arrival for the hard cover edition for a while now. Given the volume of copies they move in the States they will need to make some decisions quickly and since at least Amazon doesn't charge until shipment I imagine there will need to be some sort of confirmation on a date change. Not sure what the legal issues for retailers may be, but I can't image they can simply move the billing date without some form of notification to the consumer. Not to mention the potential cost of increased shipping costs, they are currently offering free shipping for arrival on Jan 8th. Amazon and BN will need to have a good amount of notice to arrange such a large shipping day to move.
