It's a fairy tale with somewhat traditional leanings and a book series that is pretty successful at being so visual and well-described that it almost seems like a graphic novel without pictures. I think R.J. meant to entertain us by updating features of fairy stories with our super hero fantasies, and the result is a work that by its' very size pulls the more intense reader in to find deeper meaning than is really there.
"Those who think they have no time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness."
So when the book/series ends, what will it have all meant?

It is a tale, told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
