I always assumed that was one of Rand's early moments of feeling shadowspawn because he could Channel.


You just had to find one who was a good archer.

That it may have been Slayer is plausible, if only because that's the only element from the Dark Prophecy that's completely absent from the plot of TGH otherwise.
