By the way, this book made me dislike Mat, who had been one of my favorite males for a long time. Thanks a lot, BS.
He was out of character, but that's been the case since Sanderson started writing. What in particular irritated you?
I tolerated him since Sanderson started writing him, and accepted that he acted like he had schizophrenia and couldn't make up his mind how to act, but when he kept thinking ill of Rand and was being such a dick about him and ignoring the pull from him simply because he wanted nothing to do with him, I started wising Demandred would smash his bloody face in and crush them all. In this book, Mat proved himself to be no better friend than Egwene. Egwene treats her friends like crap and expects them to bow down to her every whim, whereas Mat just writes his friends off and leaves them on their own because he refuses to see them for who they are. His treatment of and attitude toward Rand were appalling to me, and the fact that he didn't give a damn that someone who was once one of his best friends had just freaking died to save everyone, including him and his piece of crap wife just made it worse. I liked it when that Hero of the Horn told him off about Rand saving his life not once, but twice. Unfortunately, he was still an ass about it after that. It irked me.
So, is anyone else thinking that ending was a bit of a dick move....

That was my interpretation as well. I think it was an attempt at showing Rand's humility. *NM*

Even if she would just have been burned out there was no reason to think it permanent.

One point- the DO didn't break free, Rand dragged him out into the Pattern, specifically to kill him
