it's still quite clear that BS doesn't have much character empathy, at least not in the sense of taking well established characters and building on their archetypes. BS started from the beginning with mat as cartoonish buffoon and only worked in his other compelling traits as an afterthought IMHO. i didn't find mat's character *that* far off in aMoL, but it still wasn't *Mat*

At least in this book Mat knew how to spell. But still, he was very different from the Mat of RJ's time. I read the Prince of Ravens chapter from KoD yesterday, just to be sure, and the two characters are entirely different. Sanderson's Mat is a buffoon, a caricature, the rascal that Egwene and everyone else seem to think he is, who just has some battle knowledge on the side. RJ's Mat was someone with mischievous tendencies, and maybe some buffoonish traits at time, but at his core he was intelligent, capable, and honorable. He didn't just have memories of battle knowledge, he lived and breathed general.

Sanderson didn't mess up on any other character nearly as much.
