I had generally considered that the greenmen were a necessary part of the Aiel song. As that appears not to be the case, what exactly was their purpose?
Was it nothing more than?

I think Jeordam is probably right. I think they ultimately ended up being used as gardeners. I know it's not the most glamorous career, but such a being would be very useful.
