I agree with most of your post. The dragons in the cavern is highly unlikely to work. The percussion in the confined space would probably have killed the gunners.

Cannon on sailing ships worked fine without killing the gunners while in confined spaces. The dragons aren't 16 inch Iowa class guns, they were smaller front-loading cannons, so they would have lower muzzle velocity and lower concussion.
