After loading, the cannon on wooded sailing ships were pulled up tight on the gunport. This means the muzzle was on the outside skin of the ship. The concussion started outside the ship and was pushed further out. Inside a cave with multiple cannon firing the concussion would bounce around off of the stone walls, magnifying the effect.
