I was about to ask if "opportunist" must mean "selfish?"

But then I did a minute of research. Yeah, it looks like it does.
I was originally going to say that, Mat isn't selfish, but he is very good at adapting his plans on the fly, and taking advantage of opportunities as he sees them. So, when he ended up leading troops at Cairhein, he was constantly adapting his plans. His escape from Ebou Dar, and his campaign at the end of Knife of Dreams. The way he reacted to seeing Egwene as the Amyrlin.
So, maybe that's what people meant? Because otherwise, they're idiots.
Mat is extremely, EXTREMELY loyal. I'd classify him as Loyal Friend rather than Hero, because its his loyalty that makes him heroic.
He has no desire to go out looking for wrongs to make right, but if he finds out anything bad is going to happen to anyone he's remotely loyal to, he'll fight for them.
