Mat and Perrin need to be there to help Rand. I do not know what role they will play or how they will help him, but as long as they are absent, the blackness will be swallowing the lights faster and faster.
I would not go as far as saying Rand needs to be shielded and unleashed at the end. Only he knows how to win at TG.
