That was, I thought, the most interesting thing of the whole chapter, especially in combination with the hints from elsewhere that the Forsaken don't matter that much, the real Last Battle will be quite different from how Rand imagines it and the Dark One plays a deep game.

So does everyone think that it's just a fairly silly weakness on the part of the Dark One, or is it something deeper than that?

Ishamael crafted these Oaths, and he probably holds the BA in as much contempt as he does the other Forsaken. Like the Dark One, he too looks for ambition and greed in his followers, and it is probably true that someone who had that would never betray the Dark One. Not at the price of death.

More importantly, it may well be that dying after such a betrayal will result in endless pain administered by the DO. Perhaps Verin had a clue about that...
